Drug Addiction
Monday, March 16, 2009 written @ 3:00 PM
I'm addicted. A serious case of drug addiction.
In case everyone is wondering where I've gone... No, I haven't been sleeping my day off, or shopping or anything like that. I've been cooping myself up at home, and reading. That's my addiction. Books are like my drugs - I'm addicted to them. And that's something that's been within me since I was young actually.
Alright, so I've been reading a couple of books... That's in addition to another minor addiction of mine - dramas. With those 2 addictions going on the same time, sometimes I'd be watching while reading, reading while watching. LOL...
Well, mainly, I've been reading the Twilight series, after Jeremy brought the first 2 books for me from his sis. It started off as a milder condition, reading when I'm free. But somehow, it seems that I'm always free. LOL. So the situation got worse, and I'm reading faster and faster.
So I was done with the first 2 books within days. Then I couldn't bear the temptation to read more books. I went on to the National Library the following day to get more books. hahaha... =x but considering that it's the school holidays now, the books I've been meaning to get are all gone.
I managed to get 1 though... A sequel to the Shopaholic series that I've also been following for quite a while. I realise I've been following series... and that's worse, because it makes it even more addictive.
Ok, so after reading Shopaholic & Baby, I used my dramas to fill up the remaining time in between, while waiting for Saturday, when I'd be meeting Jeremy and the rest for the university open houses. That means we can afford to do an exchange then, exchanging the 2 for the next 2!
Currently, I'm already done with the first 3 books of the Twilight series - the 3rd book I managed to finish it last night... I didn't mean to finish it in 1 day, but it so happened that after the morning of yoga, my DVD player went on strike after I finished 2 episodes, so I spent the remaining half of the late afternoon and evening reading... and poof! 500+ pages were gone. =x
Well then, let's have a look at the books I've read so far these couple of weeks...
Twilight series
The Twilight series is definitely enjoyable. A romance fiction, though it might be on vampires and werewolves, but I'd say 80-90% of it is romance, definitely. And I guess it would be something that girls would enjoy reading. I certainly can't imagine how guys would want to read that.
The first book was rather much the same as what appeared in the movie, but of course with more details that the movie couldn't manage to fit in. So from there, I got a much clearer picture of some of the things that happened. The second book made me use up quite a few sheets of tissue mainly. The third was fine, just that there were certain things I wasn't very pleased with - I shall explain why in a moment.
Though I've only been at the 3rd so far, there is already a distinct pattern in the way Stephanie Meyer writes her books. Obviously, she is one who is very descriptive with her words. Like she said in her own website, "Warning #2: As you might have guessed from the length of my book, I can't tell a short story—this is going to take a while." (This might be something I might say too, actually - a problem I find with myself as well.)
Though being descriptive has its plus points as well, it might sometimes make the story more draggy. So you see her books increasing in the number of pages - from 400+ the 1st book, 500+ the 2nd, 600+ in the 3rd, to 700+ in the 4th. lol...
But I do like the way she describes certain things. I like the way she describes the tone of speech, the different expressions on the characters, and the entire situation of the place, the feelings, the response.
These are the points that make me want to read the book more than watching the movie. Because some things are better left to the imagination of the reader. Meyer provides us with such a vivid description that I think the movie might not be able to do that justice, cos everyone has different ways of interpreting the beauty described. Also, it is hard to achieve the exact tone and expression sometimes, or it wouldn't be as good as when you read it.
One part which I especially loved was in the 2nd book, where they made use of empty pages to show how time passes. Each page had the month specified, so as you flip, you'd be flipping on to another month. It just seems to emphasize on the time that was passing so slowly for our main character. I thought that idea was really damn cool.
Much as I do indulge in the sweetness and love of the two main characters, there's only one thing I wasn't too pleased with. Don't read on if you don't want a spoiler...
Well, in the 3rd book, Bella actually discovers that she loves Jacob too. Although it isn't as much as she loves Edward, but it makes me feel a bit indignant. It's odd that someone has to come in and spoil the entire story. It's like a blemish in a perfect fantasy. Much as that is the case, it really makes me wonder if it really is possible - to love 2 people at the same time? I think it might.
That's all I've to say actually. Until I read the final book. I'm now looking at how long I could last without attempting to open the book and read. It seriously feels like some drug addiction, and it doesn't help that the books are just lying beside my sofa, waiting for me to pick it up.
Actually, like Shirley suggests, it would be quite interesting to read Midnight Sun, which is actually a new book coming up from the Twilight series. It is Edward's version of Twilight. It would certainly be interesting, but I'm not sure if I'm expecting much, because it's a female writer writing from a male's point of view.
I think it is really quite impossible for a girl to fully relate what exactly is on a guy's mind, and vice versa, of course. Much as I would like to read that as well, I really wonder what would come out of it. Let's just hope that Stephanie Meyer wouldn't disappoint us then! =p
Shopaholic series
Well, this is another series that I enjoy rather much. I'd have to admit that some parts, especially the beginning of the 1st book, are rather dry and hard to lock people's attention. But as you read on further, what I really liked was how it always makes me laugh. It feels so real that I realise they way I talk is even influenced by some of the conversations within the book.
I'd say the book is a good reflection of how girls actually think when they buy things. I mean, not that none of us are conscious when we buy stuff, but the author is just able to describe this urge to buy things very aptly and perfectly. It really makes me want to laugh at the way we think sometimes.
While waiting for the other 2 books from Jeremy, this was a really good change to Twilight. It just makes me feel light-hearted to read it. It made me laugh, it made me cry too. But at the end of the day, it's always a happy ending.
The movie on the 1st book is coming out soon! Confessions of a Shopaholic. Anyone wants to catch that with me? =)
Back to now...
Well, of course I'm still waiting for my Harry Potter 6th movie to come out, though it was in the newspaper today about some criticisms on the movie. Hopefully it's not as bad as they made it sound. I've waited for another half a year for this. -_-lll
Maybe I'd consider rereading the book just before going to watch. LOL... =x
The weather outside is pouring. Heavy, light, heavy, light. Well, just as I'm typing this, I think the rain has stopped cos I can hear the birds coming out and chirping happily already. I was still thinking the weather was a perfect fit for reading Twilight just now. hahaha!
Hmm... Now I don't have much excuses for me to touch the 4th book. Though I don't think I'll be able to last that long anyway... Ok, till then... Cya! =)
