Scary Hell
Tuesday, April 21, 2009 written @ 8:07 PM
I got the scare of my life yesterday.
At 9.55am in the morning, I was awoken by my maid. She was telling me that my grandma had a fall and her head was bleeding, her left hand is swollen, and her back is aching. Totally scared the hell out of me. The previous time I got scared up, was when my mum came into my room telling me that my grandma fell and hit her head. Same situation, just that this time, I'm all alone to face this.
I'm glad my maid gave quite good descriptions. At least, it lets me have enough mental preparation for what to expect. So I went to my grandma in the morning, and when she saw me, she started telling me the whole story of how she fell.
It turned out that she wanted to see if there's anything she needs to arrange up there in her cupboard, so she got a stool and stood on it. Who knows (like I half expected that), the stool slipped and she crashed right onto the floor. She hit her head, her back and her left arm.
She could still proudly tell me that my aunt doesn't even know about it (when she's like, in the opposite room). She said my aunt still didn't know about it when my grandma made her way here, probably cos she's able to walk like normal. My grandma even said, "Don't tell her later when she comes." What the hell.
But what my maid told me was that when my grandma came right through the doors, her whole shirt was soaked in blood. Her greying hair was drenched in blood. I didn't even dare to imagine that. Well, obviously, yet again, my grandma just laughed it off and told me about how she reached here and went to wash her hair to get the blood off. *Shudders*
First of all, I examined her face. Despite the smile she kept putting on through out the repetition of her story, her face was really pale. There were not much colour on her lips. I checked her forehead, no fever.
When I saw the wound at the back of her head, it seems like the exact same spot that bled the previous time! The wound isn't small, I'd tell you. My maid (though she exaggerated it a bit) was saying it's like the size of a 50-cent coin. I couldn't bear to leave my eyes lingering for longer than 2 seconds. At least the bleeding stopped. Or, it wasn't so profuse. =x
Next, her hand. Her left wrist was so swollen, and it was bruised. Totally greenish-blue. To top it off, it even appears twisted to me. My grandma kept insisting the bump was much bigger before this, but subsided a lot after she applied Tiger balm on it. I secretly asked my maid after that, and my maid was like, "No! Still same!"
Then, her back. The previous time she fell, she kind of injured her spine too. I think there was a slight collapse or something. She was saying it's just a bit of an ache at the back. But my maid told me she couldn't even bend down just now when washing her hair.
Ok, injuries inspected. Now, the difficult part comes. Trying to persuade her to go to the doctor's. I tell you, my grandma is a super duper obstinate mule. Not to mention, she's old. You know how old people are so stubborn about not wanting to go to the doctors. My grandma is much worse than that, because she has never ever seen a doctor in her whole life, until recent years.
Gosh, no matter how I tried to convince, persuade or threaten, she just wouldn't give in. She just didn't want to go to the doctor's over this kind of 'small matters' (or so, as she describes) and wasting unnecessary money. She kept insisting she knows her body well, she's ok, we can see again tomorrow.
Halfway through, I even broke down in tears for feeling so helpless - helplessly watching as I know that hand is obviously a fracture, helplessly looking as I know that head injury might cause a concussion, helplessly talking but to no avail of helping at all.
So when I was walking out of the room, totally dejected, my grandma was still asking me 'not to worry' in Teochew. Great. Please tell me how not to?
It took me quite a while to figure out what was the right thing to do. My dad is overseas. Yet, I didn't want to call my mum, cos she seems pretty stressed out by work these few days. I wouldn't want to call her in the middle of her meeting and tell her this news to make her even more worried. Neither could I call my sis (who was asking me why didn't I do that after she came to know about it at night), who is in the middle of having her lessons! What could she do to help, but feel as helpless as me?
Ok, so I finally decided on calling my aunt. At least she's just near enough. I dialed. The phone couldn't get through. How wonderful. So for the entire half an hour, I was randomly re-dialing, while talking to some people online. It was hard, you know. My grandma was constantly coming out of her room and taking little walks, but I suspect that her main purpose was to make sure I wasn't up to anything.
Finally, the phone got through at 11.30am. I told her the whole story, and she was just asking me to monitor and see how things go. She said she'd take a look when she comes over in the afternoon. At least, I was slightly more relieved. But I continued to take peeks into the room to just have a look at what my grandma is doing.
The rest of the day just proceeded like normal, while I went out to teach tuition in the afternoon. At night, after my grandma and aunt went home, that was then I told my mum about my grandma falling this morning. Obviously, my mum was scolding me for not telling her earlier!
She said I could have called my uncle and asked him to come down to fetch my grandma to the doctor's. Oh ya, I didn't think of that. And she said, "You don't have to give her a choice. Just ask, you want us to fetch you to the doc, or you want us to call the ambulance here to fetch you there?" Oh wow.
And yeah, I just realised I wasn't being very smart after all. To think I called my aunt, who is so like my grandma - anti-doctor. I forgot about that. Like mother, like daughter. I should have known. Damn.
Oh well, so last night my mum called my uncle and made arrangements for him to come this morning to bring my grandma to the doctor's. I wanted to go, but couldn't, since I was starting work today. Sigh.
Just now, when I came home, my grandma was showing me the cast and sling she's got over her left arm now. See, I knew it was a fracture. =x But I was glad to find out that her head is ok, no fractures on the skull, and her spine is alright too.
After dinner, I was reading her medical reports and x-ray reports. It turned out that she has 2 fractures on her arm! One at the wrist area - the more serious one, and the other at the elbow area - slight. Gosh. There's a compression at the T11 part of the spine, which was probably there since the last fall.
All the tests and x-rays totaled up to about $500+. Well, at least it managed to calm our hearts, for that matter.
Ok, enough on that. Today was my first day at work - at my mum's office as a part time admin assistant. One word - boring. hahaha... =x
I'm helping out in the accounts department, so I had to deal with numbers and numbers all day. By mid-day, my eyes were totally dry, and my shoulders were stiff from all that lack of exercise. The worst thing is, I can't find my usual habit of escaping to the toilet to at least move around a bit, because the toilet was horrible. Bleah.
By the end of the day, at around evening, I had to start looking for people online to talk to. LOL. It was quite scary though, cos I really had no idea which guy there is the boss. So I was quite worried whenever anyone walked pass and saw that orange light flashing at the bottom of my monitor.
The best thing is, my seat is super exposed. It's right beside the common passageway, and on top of that, the photocopying machine cum printer cum fax machine cum scanner, is right behind me. So everyone can see what I'm doing. Very nice.
I met a few interesting people, though. There's a few girls who appear quite funny, though I didn't have the chance to talk to them much. And of course, my favourite hobby is not forgotten. Some of the mechanics there were quite good-looking. =D
At first, I spotted a very good looking guy. Nice eyes. But I found out from my mum on the way home, that he's from China. I saw a second good looking guy too. But when he spoke, I found out, he's from China. -_-lll
Ah, anyway, there are quite a lot of Malaysians and Chinese working in that company. I'm not being racist. I do make friends with them, okay. Some of them are quite fun and nice.
Ok, time for TV now! =)
I wonder how I'm going to survive tomorrow... Having to teach tuition straight after work. Haiz. =(
