Updates, Updates!
Sunday, August 23, 2009 written @ 5:00 PM
Okay, there's far too much backlot to clear... And I suspect I'm suffering from Alzheimer's. I can't seem to recall many details like I used to be able to already... =(
Let's start with a quick recap since before school started, before proceeding with some of the significant events over the past 2 weeks. (I'm sorry Andy, I like to post long long posts... But it's okay, you can read them over a course of 7 days... =p)
Science Orientation Week
(29 July - 8 August 2009)
Highlights of SOW:
- Survived on an average of 3 hours of sleep every night (or I should say, morning?)
- Supper almost every night at NUH
- My hunger pangs are notorious, especially to people around me
- Managed to collect almost 2 full tins during Flag Day
- Helped to push the chicken during RAG!
- Got exposed to a variety of games people play when they are bored
- Had 2 pageant finalists in my OG
- My OGL turned out to be an ex-classmate of dear, and we actually met in the same house half a year ago
- Had a senior who insisted on becoming my brother
- Made a new girlfriend, my 5th girlfriend
- That girlfriend of mine thought I was a Malay even on Day 1
- I became super chaota by the end of it all
- Quite a handful of people thought I was Malay
- Someone even spoke Malay to me (I should have replied him in Malay)
- Exposed to many bouts of suspected H1N1 cases
- I'm still alive.
Sarah's Birthday Celebration
(Saturday, 15 August 2009)
Met the clique on Saturday to celebrate Sarah's birthday! =)
Shirley wanted to give Sarah a surprise with the rest of us there, but apparently it didn't quite work out very well. I guess it was mostly because the place was too open. No where for us to hide! We ate at Manhattan Fish Market, and the staff there weren't very patient. Anyway, we managed to get our super long table for 9, ate and then sang the birthday song!
The manager came out on the pretext of wishing Sarah a happy birthday while smearing some white sticky stuff onto her hands. She was saying other managers do it on the face. Hmm... It would have been interesting to see that.
I think by the end of it, we were all very full and sick of fish or any related fried stuff. Wanted to proceed on to Escape theme park, but it was raining! We figured that they probably won't allow us onto the rides anyway, so we had to change plan. Went to E-hub to take a look around before deciding to go Kbox!
Been quite long since we sang, so anyway we went there and got a super big room to ourselves. Took many many photos with my DSLR... Refer to facebook for the photos!
After singing, we went to my house for a second round! Anyway, we skipped dinner cos lunch was too filling, and Kbox scared us further with a whole plate full of fried snacks. Shirley said looking at it made her feel like puking.
Over at my house, we had our usual Mahjong sessions, where Fiona and Nicholas joined us. So we mahjong-ed all the way until around 11. In between, we had a few sessions with my newly bought Wii.
It felt so good to be able to see the rest of them again. I was really comforted when I saw people talking and engaging in their conversations. Somehow, I really missed that kind of feeling. Glad to see it again. Missed those times...
Dinner + Stayover
(21 - 22 August 2009)
Met dear and a few of his friends for dinner on Friday night! We went to this cafe on Ang Siang Hill, called Ark. The setting indoors is quite cosy and quiet. A very nice place to just sit around with friends.
My lesson was supposed to end at 7, but it was delayed cos the prof was trying to finish up all the questions in the tutorial. Luckily 95 came fast enough, and I met my JC senior on the bus! Turned out that Ruoyan knew him too. And he knows Steven. It's a small world.
Anyway, we got on the train, and Ruoyan was stuck with the 2 of us. At first she kept complaining she was too bright there and she should go, but we just continued talking to her till we got down at Outram.
At Outram, dear suddenly saw a familiar face amidst the sea of people. Turned out to be Hui Ling! She's just too tall and stand out too much to be missed. It's really a small world.
Well, turned out that we were not late in the end. His friends are really quite a crazy bunch of people, but at least they're very friendly. We were there for only an hour or so, and they were closing already! So no choice, we had to get out once we were done with dessert.
We got a lift back to Bukit Batok, and it was already almost 11 when we reached. I actually had to spend quite a few days before this trying to persuade my parents to let me stay over at his house. So there, I was sleeping under that same roof I used to sleep in 15 years ago. =)
School in Summary
Okay, here comes the long one... Sorry, but I failed my summary since secondary school! =x
With 2 weeks into University, people are asking how's life. Seriously, University life isn't great at all, for reasons stated out in Fiona's blog. Actually, many things happening here reminds me of my secondary school days. I can somehow see a link between the 2.
I think a great portion of it is due to the people I meet here. My life in secondary school was just a really plain, normal, mundane, any other synonyms you can think of. I would say, my friends there - we were just interacting at a superficial level. Not that people were superficial, but we just don't click. Yes, there were cliques and all, but I probably just couldn't find people of the same frequency.
Then my change into poly was a whole life-changing experience. Right from the start, I actually had a slight bit of culture shock. It's totally different, really. There was probably some kind of fate that led me to the right people, but they really splashed a whole lot of colours into my life. Somehow, I feel that I met people who are really true. They are the ones who'd open themselves up to me.
Coming back to University life, I have no idea why, but the feeling is yet so familiar again. The people, the kind of competitiveness, the type of strange, so-close-yet-not-so-close feeling, if you get what I mean. I guess that's the reason why the few of us from poly are so anti-uni.
Sigh, I miss poly life.
On the other hand, I shall just touch on some of the school work too. Lab sessions are long and draggy, as usual, and to top it off, there isn't the kind of lab environment we used to have in T11A. The kind of crazy stuff we used to do in the lab. This lab here doesn't give us the sense of home and cosiness at all. =(
Biochemistry lab was quite bad. Cos I suck at Chemistry. So well, my lab partner was the main person doing all the titration and stuff, since he's a 191cm tall guy, he can easily reach the top of the burette, and read readings off at eye level without having to stand on benches (like how I'll need to).
Well basically, I think he's a very intellectual person from JC (I'm not saying which), who insisted on 'discussing' the questions for the lab report even after I've asked him umpteen times to just split the questions. I thought he was probably insecure about his answers, but I'm sorry, it turned out that he was insecure about MY answers! Quite insulting actually.
Anyway, I went to key the 80+ data points into excel, added the formulas and calculated everything, plotted the curve nicely and all, very neatly done. When I showed it to him, he wanted to add a few more stuff here and there, like adding vertical lines onto the graph. After like 1 hour or so, he told me he'll draw it out on graph paper, cos he feels weird handing in something looking like that. -_-lll
Oh well, luckily the second lab for genetics was better. My lab partner this time is a Vietnamese. He's like 2 years younger than me! That's the age of my sister! Gosh, I feel old. Anyway, he's a very humble person and even asked me to guide him along since I've done some of those practicals before. Nice guy. LOL! =)
Finished that lab within 2.5 hours, while waiting for the rest to finish after another hour or so. Made me feel quite superior actually. HAHA. =x
Oh yes, and the chemistry bridging module they made us take was plain stupid. They're teaching us O-level stuff, like how to calculate mole and pH. I'm considering skipping all the subsequent lectures.
And I just bought a biochemistry textbook from the used textbook forum, secondhand at $40. Somehow I feel quite cheated by it. Regret regret... =(
Alright, that's basically all. Right, sorry for all the complaints. Anyway, I came up with a new word! It's called 'unisux'. Makes my replies much easier whenever anyone asks me how's uni so far.
By the way, I suddenly understand what Andy means in his post on 'two worlds'.
